LOLER 1998 Regulation 9
Thorough examination of lifting equipment
A thorough examination is a systematic, detailed examination of lifting equipment and its safety-critical parts by a competent person. It is separate from routine maintenance and must result in a written report.
- Before first use where the Regulation requires it
- After installation or assembly where safety depends on it
- At statutory intervals or under a competent-person examination scheme
- After exceptional circumstances liable to jeopardise safety
Unless an examination scheme specifies otherwise, the usual intervals are 6 months for lifting people and lifting accessories, and 12 months for other lifting equipment.
